Satelite tracking of marine turtles

Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) may grow over 1m in length and weigh 120kg. They may live up to 80 years, and are mature at 30 years old. Over 2,500 turtles are caught accidentally in nets every year in the Croatian Adriatic. This area is believed to be important as an over-wintering and foraging area for the Greek population of loggerhead turtles.

Croatian Natural History Museum and Blue World in cooperation are carrying out Adriatic Marine Turtle Programm, a program of research and conservation of marine turtles in the Adriatic sea. One of the activities within the programm is satelite tracking.

During the afternoon of 7th September 2006. Calypso, the first marine turtle with satelite transmiter has been released on Lošinj.

Calypso is a large juvenile (CCLn-t: 66.5 cm) loggerhead turtle, named after the bottom trawl that incidentally caught it on 24 June 2006 while it was swimming in neritic waters off Lošinj Island (Croatia).

The animal was rescued and transported to the Sea Turtle Rescue Center of Pula Aquarium where it was waiting for a satelite tag.

When captured, Calypso was apparently healthy and in good condition. Two days before its release, Calypso was transported back to Blue World Institute facilities on Losinj Island, where he was equipped with a satellite transmitter and released on 7 September 2006 with local and national media coverage.

Satelite tracking programm is carried out within the joint Italian-Croatian-Slovenian project named "AdriaWatch", coordinated by the Islameta Group, Dept. of Biology - University of Pisa

You can monitor Calypso's traveling on-line by checking this map

20. May 2007. We received the news that Calypso was found dead in the Bay of Venice in Boca di porto di Malamocco. Calypso was probably caught in the net where it drowned.
