This year Dolphin Day was organized for the 19th time in Veli Lošinj. The biggest novelty for this year's event was the change of the date since we moved the celebration from the usual first Saturday in August to the 1st of July. This decision was not taken lightly as we are aware many of our supporters could not join us this year. However, in cooperation with the sponsor of the event, the Mali Lošinj Tourist Board, we decided on the new date as the first weekend in August is congested with several parallel events taking place on the island. The visitor’s response and participation of exceeded our expectations and we decided that all future Dolphin Days will be held on the 1st of July, irrespective of which day of the week this date falls.
At the exhibition of children's art work a record number of schools and kindergartens responded from across Croatia and presented 430 drawings using various art techniques. Due to the large turnout, we decided to award prizes in two categories - individual and group. The best individual drawing was by Ivan Grgic, an elementary school student from class 4.b of the OŠ Jure Kaštelana school in Zagreb. The best teamwork and exceptional effort award was given to the work of elementary school class 3b from OŠ Kozala in Rijeka. Since the winners did not attend the presentation, the prize will be sent by mail.
The official beginning of the 19th Dolphin Day was held at noon in the Lošinj Marine Education Center by the opening of an exhibition of photographs from the Lošinj Photo Club titled "The Island". The works of 13 authors are exhibited and can be seen in the LMEC until the end of July.
In cooperation with the Lošinj-Jason water-polo Club, there was the traditional water-polo tournament organized in the afternoon in Rovenska bay, it was attended by 8 teams and won by team “Orcs”.
The art workshops attracted a record number of children, the favorite technique this year proved to be chalk. In an hour the whole square in front of the Lošinj Marine Education Centre was painted with colorful little works of art.
The treasure hunt game gathered 80 players aged between 7 and 14, divided into 9 teams. The winner was the team "Pirates of Lošinj," which consisted of children from the Children's Hospital Srebrnjak joining our event during a stay for recovery on Lošinj.
In the evening, the winners of all competitions were announced, including the web contest for the best photography on the "Details of the island of Lošinj", organized on the website of our Dolphin Day partners - travel agency Turist. The winning photo was “La Turista” by Marco Dilavanza from Padova, Italy. The winner’s photos, as well as all the other competitions can be seen on www.island-losinj.com.
The 19th Dolphin day ended late in the evening with a beautiful guitar concert from the trio PASABI from Mali Lošinj. And the next day we started to collect the new children's drawings for the 20th Dolphin Day on Sunday the 1st of July 2012.... see you there…
