In late 2009 he Blue World Institute, in collaboration with partners from University College London, and Dalhousie University, Canada and UNEP organized a working conference “Governance of Marine Protected Areas – getting the balance right” which was held in Losinj.

The event was attended by Marine Protected Area managers, scientists and representatives of the administrations from different countries from almost all continents, from Australia, South Korea, China, Brazil, Ecuador, the United States, Great Britain, Spain and Croatia. The goal, through analysing examples of best practice, was to create a manual on marine protected area governance. The handbook was completed in 2011 and can be downloaded from our site.

In recent days one of the world’s leading scientific journals “Nature” published a review of the results of management analysis presented in this report. The article mentions the Cres-Losinj MPA, unfortunately, as an example of the reserve that exists only on paper. The full article is available on the pages of the magazine “Nature“.
