In the period 2-10 May 2019 Blue World Institute has organized a Marine Bioacoustic workshop within SCOR (Scientific Committee for Oceanographic Research) Visiting Scholars Program in collaboration with dr.sc. Ana Širović and the Department of Marine Biology, Texas A&M University Galveston (USA). Participants had the unique opportunity to broaden their knowledge in this relatively new scientific branch. The theoretical part of the workshop included an introduction to underwater acoustics, methods of data collection and data analysis and interpretation. Within the practical part each participant had the opportunity to familiarize with the use of different computer programs for sound analysis and detection and classification of whales and dolphins sounds. The workshop incorporated also lectures about hearing sensitivity of other marine animals and the effects of noise on them.
This workshop represents a follow-up of the collaboration with Texas A&M University Galveston in terms of developing and undertaking joint scientific projects based on the use of contemporary passive acoustic techniques.
