The Adriatic Sea is a semi-enclosed basin of the Mediterranean Sea, extending deep into the middle part of the European continent. Its western and northern shores bordered by Italy and Slovenia, with Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and Greece to its east. The Adriatic Sea is about 800km long and 200km wide. The Strait of Otranto links the Adriatic to the Ionian Sea and the wider Mediterranean. Over a thousand islands form most of the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea; 60 of these islands are inhabited. Most of the Blue World Institute’s work takes place in northern and central Adriatic, in and around the islands of Lošinj to the north, Murter and Vis in central part.
