The second workshop for fishermen aimed at promoting dolphin watching as an activity that can replace or supplement the traditional activity of fishermen was held in Sv. Martin Bay in Mali Lošinj. The workshop is part of the project LIFE Delfi – Lowering fishing interactions, conducted in partnership with nine partners from Italy to implement technical solutions and disseminate knowledge that goes towards lowering the negative impacts of these interactions, both for the fishermen and for the dolphins.

The workshop delivers information needed to start the activity of dolphin watching in a manner that ensures the long-term sustainability of this activity, including and not limited to best practice in conduct while in the vicinity of these animals as well as the basic knowledge on assessing their health status.

Participants were also informed on other activities in the project, which are important to the local community and able to be implemented in their respective fishing activities. Fishermen were again acquainted with acoustic deterrent devices aimed at reducing dolphin depredation and consequently the levels of bycatch and related harming or death during fishing operations.

This project is implemented with the contribution of the LIFE financial instrument of the European Union. Find out more about the LIFE Delfi project here
