On 15 May, the Blue World Institute marked Posidonia Day on the island of Lošinj with a series of educational and outreach activities dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of Posidonia oceanica, one of the Mediterranean’s most valuable marine habitats.
The programme brought together local residents, stakeholders, schoolchildren, scientists, and conservation practitioners to learn more about the ecological role of Posidonia meadows and the challenges they face from increasing human pressures. Activities included educational workshops for students, a public lecture, media outreach, and discussions on sustainable marine management.
A special highlight of the event was the premiere of a new animated film about Posidonia, produced by the Blue World Institute in collaboration with Trickfilm Lounge, with support from Seacology and the Lošinj Tourist Board. Through engaging visuals and storytelling, the film introduces audiences to the hidden underwater forests surrounding Lošinj and their crucial role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.
By celebrating Posidonia Day, we aim to strengthen local stewardship of the marine environment and encourage responsible behaviour that helps protect these extraordinary underwater meadows for future generations.
We would like to thank all partners, participants, schools, institutions, and members of the local community who contributed to making this event a success.
