Posidonia oceanica is one of the most important species in the Adriatic Sea. These ancient seagrass meadows stabilize the seafloor, produce oxygen, store carbon, and provide essential habitat for countless marine organisms. However, they are increasingly threatened by coastal development, anchoring, and pollution.
To address this, Blue World Institute partnered with Seacology, a global leader in island conservation, to implement a project focused on protecting and restoring seagrass habitats around Lošinj through education and community involvement.
Project Goals
• Raise awareness among local residents, boaters, and tourists about the ecological value of Posidonia oceanica.
• Develop educational materials and informational signage for beaches and marinas to encourage responsible practices.
• Engage schools and the local community through events such as Community Posidonia Day, beach clean-ups, and citizen science activities.
By combining scientific expertise with community engagement, this project promotes sustainable marine practices and helps preserve the unique biodiversity of the Adriatic for future generations.
Our Partner
